U&A celebrate 5 years at the top of the electronic tree with a series of peerless EPs, each one jammed pack full of exclusive goodies from the label and their friends.

Compulsive, smashed floors worldwide. Support on this from Plump DJs, StereoHeroes, BoogieMafia, Robb G, Blaze Tripp, DJ Chamber& more …
Lee Coombs then steps up to the plate with an excellent re-working of his Hyperion ‘Gotta Let Go’ remix, bringing it bang up to date with his trademark acid house vibes. Support from Meat KatieDylan Rhymes & more

Last but not least U&A is proud to introduce young American prodigy Hunter Vaughan into the fray as he remixes the hell out of Zodiac Cartel’s ‘Klappyn’ with a truly epic, hi-tec re-read. Support on this from Black Noise, Paper Buddha & more….

Hunter Vaughan – Meltdown Mix Oct 2010

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

I’ve been a longtime fan and supporter of local talent here in Dallas, TX.  Unfortunately, I’ve had to see some of the most original and upfront thinking dj’s and producers move away to greener pastures.  From the deep, booty shaking style of Brett Johnson to the out of bounds, funky and twisted vision of electronic mayhem of Maetrik, we have lost true visionaries in the world of electronic music.  They cut their chops here, and they are missed but certainly not forgotten.  In this day and age, producing music is a must and Dallas has a rising star in the midst.  Hunter Vaughan has been slaving away for a good three years now, honing his sound and developing a style that is all his own.  He won the Dandy Kid Records remix competition, and was a finalist in Elite Force’s U&A Recordings remix competition of the Mike Hulme track “Sweet Inspiration” .  He is one of my favorite local dj’s to see play live, and his mix for the massive Meltdown show is here for you to enjoy.  He’s going to be the one to watch in 2011, I assure you.  This mix is  dark, deep and dirty, just like we like it.  Play it loud!!

Old Skool DJ Gary-O EDGEClub Midnight Mix – 1995

Monday, December 6th, 2010

A few weeks ago I got an email from Clynt Breeding, a head from back in the day, who had one of my EDGEClub mixes in his possession – one that I had misplaced over the years. Here it is for your listening pleasure – March 18, 1995 – a blast from the past. Sorry I don’t have a complete track listing on this one, but you may recognize a few of them. The first song is one of my top 10 tracks of all time called “I Shall Be Released” (DiY Love Cabbage Mix) by Alabama Three, followed immediately by “Talk to Me” (Sasha’s Full Music Master) by Hysterix. Jeff K (host of EDGEClub at the time), has the complete playlist here. Just look for March 1995.

Bassed and Confused – Michael Todd DJ Mix

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

It has been quite some time since I have posted one of my mixes, so here ya go!!  This is a mix I did in preparation for a party in my old Ft Worth stomping grounds.  The party was called “Dazed and Confused” and since I’m a big fan of the fat, funky and dirty basslines, I thought this would get your ears bumping!  Lots of good booty shakin’ madness on this one and, as always, feel free to hook up your friends on it.  This is a paperbuddha exclusive, so don’t sleep on it.  And the new Mike Hulme on this mix is just murdering the dancefloors at the moment!   Go get it asap here!! Elite Force Interview and Mix

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Sorry for the tardiness on this post, but the past weekend just absolutely spent me!

Paperbuddha has an exclusive interview with arguably the most innovative producer/dj we have seen in quite an eon.  I had the pleasure to meet Simon Shackleton, aka Elite Force, this past weekend as he played a sweaty 3 hr set in Dallas, Texas at Afterlife.  We even managed to muster up enough strength to watch the World Cup Final at a proper pub in Grapevine before he had to jet back home.  Enjoy!

01. You obviously love to meld different styles of music.  What do you listen to that catches your ear?

I was talking about this the other day actually on my Facebook page and regardless of the genre I think I just respond to music that ‘connects’ with me somehow, on a personal level. I guess it comes down to the ‘heart & soul’ of the music above anything. I’m just as taken by the dripping rock’n'roll ethos of something by Dead Weather as I am by the savage drop of an Excision dubstep monster … and equally the compulsive techno groove of something by Alex Di Stefano will ‘get me’ whilst on the other hand I will be singing my HEART out to something like ‘Station Approach’ by Elbow. Music for me is about a personal connection & a passion – I couldn’t care less about what other people say & think. I just trust my own personal judgement and I’m comfortable with my own choices without having to justify them to anyone.
02.  You were one of the first electronic artists to use direct to fan marketing.  What attracted you to the concept?

In some ways that sounds a bit corny or a bit ‘focus group’ but that’s more a reflection of the terminology and the use of the word ‘marketing’. I’m keen to develop relationships with the people who buy into & enjoy what I do, and technology is just a facilitator that allows me to do that in a way that’s inclusive and reciprocal.

03. Deadlines for remixes/artist collaborations are inevitable.  How do you start projects and  manage the timeline to the release dates?

It’s a constant juggling act, but deadlines are to be embraced. They are your friends. They ensure that you buckle down and commit to studio time as & when you need to and it’s very rare that I’m late with delivering something to someone … time just becomes more elastic as you reach the deadline.

04. New technology is always paramount nowadays to production, especially with electronic music.  How do you weed through all the new programs and gadgets to make your sound fresh?

I’m as guilty as anyone of buying into the ‘trade mags’ in whose interest it is to constantly hype the newest, latest updates & softwares, but at the same time I’m more than aware that none of this ‘new-hype’ really matters. Look at what Hawtin’s been capable of in the past by massively restricting his sonic palette – you can say the same of many musicians over the years across a whole load of different musical fields. What really matters are the quality of your ideas, and more importantly, that your workflow expedites  these ideas rather than hampering them.

05. What qualities do you look for in new talent to sign for the U & A label?

Obviously the music needs to fit the bill for me, but just as important is that our artists understand the need to seize the networking opportunities that are out there for everyone. The more output we have from them to work with, the better, and the release of singles or even albums is now just part of that process and not the be all & end all.

06. What do you have in the pipelines that will just blow everyone away, of course without giving away all your secrets?

I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you.

Britton Spring ’10 Mix

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

This week, I have a very special guest. It’s not often he has the time to put together a mix, but when he does, it’s something I really enjoy listening to. He was pretty much my partner in crime for a good decade; we threw so many parties and events and had residencies at clubs I can barely even remember. Our Groov-E Company days were so memorable and just make me smile everytime I think about them.

DJ Britton was pretty much the first dj/promoter to bring underground dance music to the unsuspecting masses in Ft Worth TX. Our Nervosa night on Sundays at 8.0 featured some killer talent, local and nationally. From Rob Vaughan and Redeye to DJ Love and Lance Cashion, just about every Dallas dj played there in our 5 year run. But enough about the good old days……

Keep up with Britton and his mixes here and on his Soundcloud page. Or hit him up on Facebook. Time to get ya groove on!!

Installment number two of our guest mixes is a killer!  Chris Lund of Left/Right has been kind enough to send me his mix from the Breakspoll 2010 party at Fabric from a few weeks ago.  He is a veteran dj/producer from Dallas Tx, with degrees in both music composition and audio engineering.  His work has been featured on labels such as Sound of Habib, Ego Shot and Dusted Breaks (named best new label at the Breakspoll Awards this year).  If you like your beats funky, don’t sleep on this one!

Check out his Facebook fan page, and he also has a Soundcloud page with current and past mixes.  His tracks can be found on Beatport , Amazon and I-Tunes, and his Break the System tour starts at Austin’s SXSW Festival in March.  Werd!
