I had the pleasure back in May to play with DJ Denise and fellow Mizumo Music collaborator  DJ DRC.  It was a killer show to say the least.  I got hooked up with her rerub of a killer tune from 2000 called Funk-A-Tron by Robbie Rivera.  She said to just blog the crap out of it so here it is in all it’s free 320 glory!  Enjoy!

For the last 16 years, TJR has been weaving his way in and out of the electronic music world as a DJ and producer. His djing roots began in North Carolina where he went to college for golf but discovered mixing and scratching instead. After graduating in 1998, he went full throttle with djing by making a name for himself with track selection and a scratching & mixing technique that set him apart from others. He managed to win a few DJ battles along the way and was featured in URB Magainze as a DJ to watch in the future. A few years back he utilized his DJing background for producing and has so far released original tracks and remixes on some of the most cutting edge labels around like; Potty Mouth Music, X-Mix, Wearhouse, Jack Union, InStereo, Simma, Promo Records, etc. He continues to craft his skills in the studio as well as on the decks and with his recent move across the coast to Los Angeles, CA, be on the look-out for his new label and sound.

Potty Mouth Music recently had a remix contest for the track “Jack It Like a Zombie” by The Bulgarian feat. Spoek.  This was one of the very first releases for the label, and helped push the fidget genre into prominence.  Two winners were selected to have their submissions included on the remix package; a dubstep mix by Hulk and the Cold Blank fidget/electro rework.  To say the Cold Blank mix impressed me would be a massive understatement.  These two Hollywood-based producers just flipped and funked the track up to a new level.  The full release is out now on Beatport and includes a variety of genres, including mixes from Nom de Strip (one half of Stupid Fresh), Jason Hodges, Angel Alanis and Wally Callerio.  Check out the Cold Blank mix teaser, and also enjoy some of their free bootlegs of tunes you should definitely nab!

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve stood behind the decks and put together a mix – 3 months in fact. The birth of my beautiful son, Griffin was the reason for this extended break and I’m more inspired than ever to continue following my music passion. I can’t wait until he’s old enough to tag team with me on the 1200s – won’t be long I’m sure (check out Britton’s son, Brayden – he’s down).

So for this latest mix, which I am calling “Ze ‘Stache”, I threw together a bunch of minimal, tech and electro tracks – there are a few rubber-neckin’ numbers in the appropriate places so there’s definitely some variety. I’m a little rusty after 3 months of downtime, but for the most part I think this thing sounds pretty good. Last night I was working late at Topspin and in the middle of a long period of silence (rare in our office) a groovy house track started playing on the sound system that I got completely lost in. I glanced at Peter Brambl, our creative director, and asked him who this was, assuming he had kicked on the tunes. He smiled and said, “the is me.” I was floored. Being in the music business I hear a ton of music from talented electronic musicians, but rarely do I hear songs with real depth, sophistication and potential staying power. “Regresando”, the lead single from the upcoming album “Born at Midnight” from The Silver Pesos (Peter’s band), is in my humble opinion one of these rare songs and I expect the album to be just as impressive when it’s released (coming soon!).

“Regresando” (featured several times by DJ Raul Campos on his KCRW show Nocturna) is a melodic, atmospheric, downtempo number with exceptional vocals from Chloe Conger. The song starts off simple with an infectious rhythm that keeps you engaged and eager to hear what’s next. The energy builds throughout the song and by the time it reaches the end it’s turned into a Diplo-style dancehall groove. The Regresando Remix (a cut that’s more in line with my electro/progressive house tastes) takes the song in a completely different direction while preserving the essence of what makes the original so special. This is the cut Peter played that stopped me in my tracks last night and I plan to work it into my next DJ mix (coming very soon I promise).

The Silver Pesos was formed in 2009 by producer/instrumentalist Peter Brambl, singer Chloe Conger, and guitarist Robert Weber. Their upcoming full-length release, ‘Born at Midnight’, was recorded in Santa Monica, CA and Ubud, Indonesia with a full band that features a Balinese rhythm section. It’s been four months since my last mix – way overdue for something fresh. I’ve been buried (in a very good way) helping a few very talented artists set up shop and sell music directly to their fans via the Topspin platform (Freeland, Van Hunt and Eminem to name a few).

Well, I made up for lost time digital crate digging this weekend at Beatport, and stocked up on some meaty, bouncy techno, tech, electro and straight-up house beats. Man, have I deprived myself of some good tunes. After straightening up my studio (the 4.7 magnitude earthquake we had a few weeks ago knocked over my monitors, among other things), I settled in for a two-hour mix session. I love stringing new tracks together for the first time, especially when the end result is something worth sharing with those who appreciate the bouncy stuff.
