A groove to get your week started off proper!

It’s been a loooooong, loooooong time since I’ve posted anything on Paper Buddha and even longer since I stepped up to the turntables for a little mixing. Being a new dad certainly alters one’s priorities, but that’s a great thing in this case. Spending time with my son has been incredible and the downtime from DJing has made me even more excited to get back into it again.

I can’t promise that I’ll make your rump shake as much as Michael Todd, but I’ll sure give it a shot. Thanks for keeping Paper Buddha alive and kicking in my absence. Hopefully I’ll do you proud every now and then.

I really enjoyed putting this one together. I have to give thanks to Ms. Sapphire though. She helped take the edge off of what would likely have been a serious train wreck given how tense I was prior to diving into the crates the other night. It ain’t flawless, but it sure put a smile on my face. A whole mess of Tech House, Electro, Techno and Minimal goodness wrapped together for your aural pleasure. Hijack is known for making jacking house music with bouncy beats and funk-filled grooves. His distinct sound fuses house and techno with a variety of influences, from the funky loops of 70s disco to the boompty beats of Chicago’s shuffly house cuts.

Since 2006 Hijack, has been establishing himself as one of underground dance music’s rising stars, remixing the likes of Moby, Adam Freeland, and Magik Johnson on labels such as Skint, Underwater, Potty Mouth and his own label, Jack Union Records.

His music has been played and supported by the likes of Switch, the Crookers, Riva Starr, Kissy Sellout and Annie Mac, and is a regular feature on radio shows and dance floors the world over.

Hijack’s DJ sets are packed with unreleased tracks and re-edits and have a unique sound that has led to regular appearances at venues and festivals across Europe, the USA, Australia, and South Africa, for some of the world’s biggest venues and club brands.

Jon’s Jack Union label has featured productions from the likes of house heavyweights Switch, Trevor Loveys, and Lee Mortimer, and its original style of booming quirky house music has attracted an army of avid followers.

It is very rare that I find a mix from a dj that just blows me away from start to finish.  This one captured my attention from the intro and just sucked me into it’s deep, funky netherworld.  I met this cat almost two years ago at my friend’s birthday party in Houston and to say the after party was monumental would be a statement of lame proportions.  We tagged on the decks for at least 4 hours, all the while giving the high, mid and bass knobs a workout that made me question which track was really playing.  His knowledge of classic electronic music at such a young age made me have hope for all ya’ll suckas out there!  Enjoy this mix by Houston’s finest DJ, Chris Costello, and hit him up on his Facebook page.  You will not be disappointed.

Riva Starr has been flying under the radar for the last few years, but 2010 is set to make him an absolute superstar.  His early releases on Dirtybird were an absolute bass lover’s dream. Groovy, dirty and full of enough bleeps to make even the most loyal tech house fans take notice, his new work is off the charts.  From his killer rework of Malente’s “I Like It”  to the seductively strange accordion appeal of “I Was Drunk”, he might well be the one to follow in the coming year.  His new album, “If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade”, is available now on Made To Play Records so don’t waste time and just go and get it!

June 30th marked the 20th anniversary of the top alternative radio station in Dallas, KDGE, and there was a party last night to celebrate this milestone (wish I could have been there). The station launched on 94.5FM, then moved up the dial to 102.1FM where it currently sits today. The one show on KDGE that has stood the test of time is Edgeclub, founded by my good friend Jeff K, and presently hosted by another dear friend, DJ Merritt. When Kelly and I first started dating, we used to listen to Jeff K’s KNON show “Thudslap” and one Saturday when we were driving around Dallas listening to the show Jeff announced he was leaving KNON and moving to this new station called KDGE. We were skeptical at first, but were quickly hooked.

Edgeclub was a breath of fresh air for Dallas airwaves and currently enjoys a position as the nation’s longest-running and highest-rated mixshow on the air. During the 5-6 years Jeff hosted the show, he and his sidekick (and world-renowned DJ) Redeye/Scottie Canfield, played host to the most talented and sought after electronic/techno DJs and producers from around the globe. Miss Melissa was also Jeff’s partner in crime for a few of those years. Merritt took over the show and made it his own in 1996 when Jeff packed up his family and moved to LA to start Groove Radio with Swedish Egil (the same month Kelly and I moved to LA from Dallas). Every Edgeclub show features a late night guest mix from local and out-of town DJs, and I’ve had the privilege of being invited to guest mix 8-10 times, with my most recent appearance in February 2009. In the early years, I recorded a number of shows on tape and I’ve digitized a few of my favorite old-skool recordings for you to enjoy, including my first guest mix from July 1994 – I followed Scott Hardkiss‘ in-studio interview and debut of God Within – “The Phoenix”. I started digitizing my old mix tapes tonight and the first one I pulled out of the vault was a classic from 1991 that I treasured back in the day. The mix is by DJ Rob Vaughan at the infamous Dallas night club, ‘Aqua Lounge’. Rob was, and still is, one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to turntable mastery and I’m proud to also call him one of my closest friends. Those of you who frequented Aqua Lounge will agree with me when I say some of the most memorable nights of our lives were spent sweating it out to Rob’s tunes in that tiny little club on Main Street in Deep Ellum.

This mix was recorded on a 120-minute Sony cassette tape, and considering it’s age (18 years) it sounds quite good. I spliced both sides of the tape together to make one continuous mix – too long for a CD but perfect for an iPod. All you old-skool Dallas club kids out there – I hope you enjoy this blast from the past. It’s a great ride. Rob – sorry I misspelled your last name on the tape…; )

It’s been four months since my last mix – way overdue for something fresh. I’ve been buried (in a very good way) helping a few very talented artists set up shop and sell music directly to their fans via the Topspin platform (Freeland, Van Hunt and Eminem to name a few).

Well, I made up for lost time digital crate digging this weekend at Beatport, and stocked up on some meaty, bouncy techno, tech, electro and straight-up house beats. Man, have I deprived myself of some good tunes. After straightening up my studio (the 4.7 magnitude earthquake we had a few weeks ago knocked over my monitors, among other things), I settled in for a two-hour mix session. I love stringing new tracks together for the first time, especially when the end result is something worth sharing with those who appreciate the bouncy stuff.
