The past seven months have been insane. New work, new friends, new surroundings, and a relocation that seems like it will never end. Good thing I’ve got incredible music to listen to non stop! I cranked out this mix tonight to relieve some stress and escape for a bit. All new tunes – all tech house – all groovy. Just what the doctor ordered to shake off the craziness and recharge.

BTW – I make all of my mixes live on Technics SL1200s with Serato. No Ableton or other cut and paste apps.

Hope you like this thing – it’s a roller.

I’ve been a longtime fan and supporter of local talent here in Dallas, TX. Unfortunately, I’ve had to see some of the most original and upfront thinking dj’s and producers move away to greener pastures. From the deep, booty shaking style of Brett Johnson to the out of bounds, funky and twisted vision of electronic mayhem of Maetrik, we have lost true visionaries in the world of electronic music. They cut their chops here, and they are missed but certainly not forgotten. In this day and age, producing music is a must and Dallas has a rising star in the midst. Hunter Vaughan has been slaving away for a good three years now, honing his sound and developing a style that is all his own. He won the Dandy Kid Records remix competition, and was a finalist in Elite Force’s U&A Recordings remix competition of the Mike Hulme track “Sweet Inspiration” . He is one of my favorite local dj’s to see play live, and his mix for the massive Meltdown show is here for you to enjoy. He’s going to be the one to watch in 2011, I assure you. This mix is dark, deep and dirty, just like we like it. Play it loud!!

A few weeks ago I got an email from Clynt Breeding, a head from back in the day, who had one of my EDGEClub mixes in his possession – one that I had misplaced over the years. Here it is for your listening pleasure – March 18, 1995 – a blast from the past. Sorry I don’t have a complete track listing on this one, but you may recognize a few of them. The first song is one of my top 10 tracks of all time called “I Shall Be Released” (DiY Love Cabbage Mix) by Alabama Three, followed immediately by “Talk to Me” (Sasha’s Full Music Master) by Hysterix. Jeff K (host of EDGEClub at the time), has the complete playlist here.
A groove to get your week started off proper!

It’s been a loooooong, loooooong time since I’ve posted anything on Paper Buddha and even longer since I stepped up to the turntables for a little mixing. Being a new dad certainly alters one’s priorities, but that’s a great thing in this case. Spending time with my son has been incredible and the downtime from DJing has made me even more excited to get back into it again.

I can’t promise that I’ll make your rump shake as much as Michael Todd, but I’ll sure give it a shot. Thanks for keeping Paper Buddha alive and kicking in my absence. Hopefully I’ll do you proud every now and then.

I really enjoyed putting this one together. I have to give thanks to Ms. Sapphire though. She helped take the edge off of what would likely have been a serious train wreck given how tense I was prior to diving into the crates the other night. It ain’t flawless, but it sure put a smile on my face. A whole mess of Tech House, Electro, Techno and Minimal goodness wrapped together for your aural pleasure. Head on over to Beatport to pick up any of the tracks you really dig.

Why ‘Big Ronda’ you ask? I’ll let you know when I figure it out…

Enjoy!

It is very rare that I find a mix from a dj that just blows me away from start to finish. This one captured my attention from the intro and just sucked me into it’s deep, funky netherworld. I met this cat almost two years ago at my friend’s birthday party in Houston and to say the after party was monumental would be a statement of lame proportions. We tagged on the decks for at least 4 hours, all the while giving the high, mid and bass knobs a workout that made me question which track was really playing. His knowledge of classic electronic music at such a young age made me have hope for all ya’ll suckas out there! Enjoy this mix by Houston’s finest DJ, Chris Costello, and hit him up on his Facebook page. You will not be disappointed.

It has been quite some time since I have posted one of my mixes, so here ya go!! This is a mix I did in preparation for a party in my old Ft Worth stomping grounds. The party was called “Dazed and Confused” and since I’m a big fan of the fat, funky and dirty basslines, I thought this would get your ears bumping! Lots of good booty shakin’ madness on this one and, as always, feel free to hook up your friends on it. This is a paperbuddha exclusive, so don’t sleep on it. And the new Mike Hulme on this mix is just murdering the dancefloors at the moment! Go get it asap here!! Enjoy!!

Sorry for the tardiness on this post, but the past weekend just absolutely spent me!

Paperbuddha has an exclusive interview with arguably the most innovative producer/dj we have seen in quite an eon. I had the pleasure to meet Simon Shackleton, aka Elite Force, this past weekend as he played a sweaty 3 hr set in Dallas, Texas at Afterlife. We even managed to muster up enough strength to watch the World Cup Final at a proper pub in Grapevine before he had to jet back home. Enjoy!

01. You obviously love to meld different styles of music. What do you listen to that catches your ear?

I was talking about this the other day actually on my Facebook page and regardless of the genre I think I just respond to music that ‘connects’ with me somehow, on a personal level. I guess it comes down to the ‘heart & soul’ of the music above anything. I’m just as taken by the dripping rock’n'roll ethos of something by Dead Weather as I am by the savage drop of an Excision dubstep monster … and equally the compulsive techno groove of something by Alex Di Stefano will ‘get me’ whilst on the other hand I will be singing my HEART out to something like ‘Station Approach’ by Elbow. Music for me is about a personal connection & a passion – I couldn’t care less about what other people say & think. I just trust my own personal judgement and I’m comfortable with my own choices without having to justify them to anyone.

02. You were one of the first electronic artists to use direct to fan marketing. What attracted you to the concept?

In some ways that sounds a bit corny or a bit ‘focus group’ but that’s more a reflection of the terminology and the use of the word ‘marketing’. I’m keen to develop relationships with the people who buy into & enjoy what I do, and technology is just a facilitator that allows me to do that in a way that’s inclusive and reciprocal.

03. Deadlines for remixes/artist collaborations are inevitable. How do you start projects and manage the timeline to the release dates?

It’s a constant juggling act, but deadlines are to be embraced. They are your friends. They ensure that you buckle down and commit to studio time as & when you need to and it’s very rare that I’m late with delivering something to someone … time just becomes more elastic as you reach the deadline.

04. New technology is always paramount nowadays to production, especially with electronic music. How do you weed through all the new programs and gadgets to make your sound fresh?

I’m as guilty as anyone of buying into the ‘trade mags’ in whose interest it is to constantly hype the newest, latest updates & softwares, but at the same time I’m more than aware that none of this ‘new-hype’ really matters. Look at what Hawtin’s been capable of in the past by massively restricting his sonic palette – you can say the same of many musicians over the years across a whole load of different musical fields. What really matters are the quality of your ideas, and more importantly, that your workflow expedites these ideas rather than hampering them.

05. What qualities do you look for in new talent to sign for the U & A label?

Obviously the music needs to fit the bill for me, but just as important is that our artists understand the need to seize the networking opportunities that are out there for everyone. The more output we have from them to work with, the better, and the release of singles or even albums is now just part of that process and not the be all & end all.

06. What do you have in the pipelines that will just blow everyone away, of course without giving away all your secrets?

I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you.

His djing roots began in North Carolina where he went to college for golf but discovered mixing and scratching instead. After graduating in 1998, he went full throttle with djing by making a name for himself with track selection and a scratching & mixing technique that set him apart from others. He managed to win a few DJ battles along the way and was featured in URB Magainze as a DJ to watch in the future. A few years back he utilized his DJing background for producing and has so far released original tracks and remixes on some of the most cutting edge labels around like; Potty Mouth Music, X-Mix, Wearhouse, Jack Union, InStereo, Simma, Promo Records, etc. He continues to craft his skills in the studio as well as on the decks and with his recent move across the coast to Los Angeles, CA, be on the look-out for his new label and sound.
